It’s a little less than two weeks until Chanukah!
If you haven’t started your cookie baking yet, these are the perfect ones to start with!
All you’ll need to make these Chanukah cut-out cookies is your favorite sugar cookie recipe (or mine HERE), food gel, festive cookie cutters, and lots of pretty sprinkles and you’ve got yourself a recipe for some seriously turned up holiday cookies!
Step-by-Step Guide:
After making your favorite sugar cookie dough and coloring 1/4 of it, roll out the uncolored dough on a generously floured surface. Use a large circular cookie cutter that will accommodate the size of your Chanukah cookie cutters.
1. Place the circle shape onto your prepared baking sheet. Although not pictured, less transferring later on the better!
Now you can use the festive cookie cutters you have!
2. On your baking sheet, cut your desired shape out in the center of the circle. Here, I used a star 🙂
3. Then, remove the inner dough shape. You can either bake the inner shape of dough that you just removed as its own cookie, or you can add it to the scrapes to make more cut out cookies. Use a toothpick to help remove the inner dough shape easily.
Again, cut out the Chanukah shapes in the center of the circle cookies on your prepared baking sheet. This prevents the dough from stretching and losing its shape.
4. Now, roll out your colorful dough on a generously floured surface. Cut out the matching shape to your cutout, and carefully place it inside.
5. Bake for 10-12 minutes, depending on the size of your cookies, until lightly brown. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling.
6. Once the cookies have cooled completely, dip the edges into the glaze (recipe below) and then into your favorite sprinkles! Allow the glaze to dry completely, and then serve.
- Butter Cookie Recipe
- Blue food gel
- Sprinkles
- For the Glaze:
- 1 ½ cups confectionary sugar
- 3-4 tablespoons water or milk
- Make your favorite cookie dough. You can find my recipe above.
- Preheat the oven to 320 degrees F.
- Line baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone-baking mat. (The number of baking sheets you use will depend on your cookie/cookie cutter size). Set aside.
- With your cookie dough still in the mixing bowl, take ¾ of it out and set aside. Add food gel to the remaining ¼ of dough and mix until desired color is achieved. Set aside, and chill if the recipe you are using calls for it.
- I like to keep most of the dough uncolored. Once I have used up all my colorful dough, I color a little bit more at a time, as I need.

I hope you enjoy these festive Chanukah Cut-Out Cookies as much as I do!
